Allow time for your first payment. Setting up a Direct Debit and completing its first payment are separate steps, so give yourself time before switching. With a new Direct Debit mandate, funds typically leave your account around 5 business days after submission. Standard payments are scheduled for collection on the 1st or 15th, with processing arranged in advance. Your first eligible date depends on setup time; weekends and bank holidays can affect collection. Check your payment notification before planning your switch.

Good to know

Small questions.
Clear answers.

A few things to check before setting up your Direct Debit.

What is bank switching?

Bank switching means moving your current account to another bank. With the free Current Account Switch Service, your new bank arranges the transfer of your balance, Direct Debits and standing orders, and your old account closes. The switch takes 7 working days once arranged; opening the new account is a separate step.

Some banks offer a cash bonus to eligible customers who switch. You may need to transfer active Direct Debits, pay in a specified amount or use your debit card. Our service provides a small recurring Direct Debit; your bank handles the switch and decides whether you qualify for its offer.

Can I switch banks back to back?

Yes, you can switch more than once, provided you meet each bank’s account-opening and offer rules. Complete one switch before moving that same account again. If you want the bonus, wait until it has been paid and check any requirements to keep the account open or maintain payments afterwards.

Receiving one bonus doesn’t automatically qualify you for another. Offers may exclude previous customers, past bonus recipients or switches within the same banking group. Moving too soon can also mean losing later reward payments.

We recommend keeping your Direct Debit active and waiting until a payment has been collected from your new account before switching again. This helps demonstrate that the Direct Debit is active on that account. Always check the next bank’s offer requirements too.

Your next bank’s offer may require more Direct Debits — for example, three instead of two. If you need another, come back and set up an additional Direct Debit before your next switch.

Will this count towards my switching offer?

Yes — this is a genuine recurring Direct Debit. Check your bank’s offer for any minimum amount, payment timing or other requirements.

We strongly recommend making sure your Direct Debit is active and the first payment has been taken before you start your bank switch.

Each separate signup creates one Direct Debit, so you can set up more than one if needed.

Is my information safe?

Your bank details are entered through Stripe’s hosted checkout, which uses encrypted connections. Stripe processes the payment details needed to set up and collect your Direct Debit. We use customer and subscription information to administer the service and provide support.

We will never ask you to email your online-banking password, PIN or one-time security codes. Read Stripe’s privacy policy for details of how it handles your information.

What is Stripe, and why will I receive emails from it?

Stripe is the payment provider used for our Direct Debit checkout and subscriptions. It sends notifications about your Direct Debit setup and upcoming payments on our behalf. Stripe’s name may appear on your bank statement alongside a mandate reference.

Keep these emails: they help you check payment dates and identify your subscription. For more about its safeguards, see Stripe’s security information.

How does it work? What’s the timeline?

1. Submit — when you sign up.
You authorise your Direct Debit, and we send your setup request through Stripe.

2. Set up — typically 3 working days after submission.
Stripe registers the Direct Debit instruction with your bank. Once it is active, a payment can be collected.

3. Collect — on your plan’s schedule.
Standard: collection is scheduled for your chosen 1st or 15th, allowing time for setup.
ASAP: your first collection is requested straight away. Money typically leaves your account around 5 working days after submission, including setup time.

If you choose the 15th but sign up too late for that collection, your first payment may be on the 15th of the following month. Choose ASAP if you prefer the earliest available first collection instead of waiting for the next scheduled date.

These are typical timings, not guaranteed deadlines. Weekends, bank holidays and processing cutoffs can affect them. Check your payment notification and allow any required first payment to be collected before switching.

Can I set up more than one Direct Debit?

Yes. Simply repeat the setup process for each Direct Debit you need. Each one will be set up separately, with its own reference and monthly payment. You can use the same bank account.

Check your bank’s offer terms for any requirement to use different providers.

What if my account needs a Direct Debit of £1 or more?

Check the exact terms of your Premier account, switching offer or ongoing reward.

Need a higher amount? to match your bank’s minimum payment requirement. The amount you choose will apply to each monthly payment for that Direct Debit.

Check whether the requirement is at least £1 or more than £1, and whether it applies to each Direct Debit separately.

What’s the difference between Standard and ASAP?

Standard — 50p per month: your first payment is scheduled for the next available 1st or 15th, depending on the date you choose.

ASAP — 99p per month: we request your first payment straight away. It typically leaves your account around 5 working days later, without waiting for the 1st or 15th.

Both plans repeat monthly. ASAP removes the wait for a scheduled date; it does not make the bank process your payment faster.

Is 99p a one-off charge?

No. ASAP is a recurring subscription at 99p per Direct Debit per month. Standard is a recurring subscription at 50p per Direct Debit per month.

You can cancel anytime for free, with no cancellation fee or penalty from us. Check your bank’s offer conditions before cancelling, as ending a Direct Debit early could affect your switching reward.

Do recurring card payments count as Direct Debits?

Our service is for BACS Direct Debits. Bank-switching offers that require Direct Debits generally mean BACS Direct Debits collected from your bank account, rather than recurring payments charged to your debit or credit card.

Monthly music, film or TV streaming, and gym subscriptions do not count towards a Direct Debit requirement if they are processed as card payments. The payment method matters, not the type of subscription: a gym membership paid by BACS Direct Debit may count, subject to the bank’s terms.

Some switching offers have separate card-payment requirements. Always check the offer’s terms to see which payment methods qualify.

How do I cancel?

Simply cancel the Direct Debit through your banking app, online banking or by contacting your bank. Find the relevant instruction in your Direct Debits list and select cancel. That ends your service with us.

Once your bank notifies us of the cancellation, we will automatically close the associated Stripe subscription. You do not need to cancel separately with Stripe, and no further subscription payments will be due after cancellation.

A payment already submitted before cancellation may still be collected. If you have more than one Direct Debit with us, cancel each instruction you no longer want. Check your bank’s terms and conditions before cancelling. Some offers require you to keep Direct Debits active and continue making payments for the first few months to qualify for the full reward. Cancelling too soon could mean losing part or all of the bonus.
